The parents of the late Harvey Willgoose have expressed disappointment towards the inaction of his school regarding warning signs before his tragic death, stating that the school failed Harvey. Harvey, aged 15, was fatally stabbed by Mohammed Umar Khan, also 15, who had carried a hunting knife to All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield. The incident occurred during lunchtime in the presence of shocked students and teachers.
Following an independent review into Harvey’s death, it was revealed that there were missed opportunities to address concerning behaviors and manage risks prior to the fatal attack. The review, conducted by a former school headteacher and inspector of schools at Learn Sheffield, was undertaken at the request of St Clare Catholic Multi Academy Trust, which operates the school.
Although the trust did not release the full report due to sensitivities, they disclosed that they would fully implement the recommendations derived from it and had already made several changes after Harvey’s tragic demise in February 2025. Mark Willgoose, Harvey’s father, emphasized that the school could have prevented Harvey’s death if they had fulfilled their responsibilities.
Caroline Willgoose, Harvey’s mother, pointed out multiple warning signs displayed by Khan that went unaddressed. She reiterated the need for enhanced school security measures, such as installing knife arches, to ensure the safety of students. The couple expressed shock after reviewing the report and demanded an apology from the school for their failure to protect Harvey and other students.
The report, reviewed by the law firm Irwin Mitchell on behalf of Harvey’s family, highlighted various shortcomings in handling Khan’s behavior and weapon-related incidents. It revealed that there were lapses in safeguarding procedures and inconsistencies in addressing concerns raised by students regarding Khan’s possession of weapons.
The review outlined ten recommendations for the school, its Trust, the local authority, and the Department for Education, including the establishment of a clear weapons policy, enhanced training on knife and weapon awareness, and improved safeguarding and behavior protocols. Mrs. Willgoose fondly remembered Harvey as a vibrant and loving child, emphasizing the irreplaceable loss his death had brought to their family.
Steve Davies, the chief executive of St Clare Catholic Multi Academy Trust, acknowledged the tragedy of Harvey’s death and the need for transparency in understanding the events leading up to the incident. He assured that the trust is committed to implementing the recommendations provided in the report to enhance safety and prevent such incidents in the future.
