TUI has provided a significant update following the deaths of four British tourists who fell seriously ill and passed away during their vacation in a tropical island destination, leaving their families in search of justice.
Elena Walsh, aged 64 and from Birmingham, Mark Ashley from Bedfordshire, Karen Pooley, 64, from Gloucestershire, and a 56-year-old man died within four months last year after visiting Cape Verde, an island nation located off the West African coast. They are among six Britons who have died in the country since 2023, with many others reporting suffering from severe gastric symptoms, such as diarrhea, while holidaying there.
The families of the deceased individuals are now pursuing compensation from Tui, the travel company through which they had booked their trips, prompting the company to break its silence on the matter.
Emma Ashley, widow of Mr. Ashley, revealed that they had booked their holiday with Tui for over £3,000, expecting a relaxing getaway. However, Mr. Ashley fell seriously ill, and despite reporting his symptoms to Tui on October 9, his condition deteriorated upon their return to the UK, leading to his death at their home in Houghton Regis on November 12.
Similarly, Ms. Pooley, who had also paid more than £3,000 for her two-week trip via Tui, passed away after four days of sickness, during which she slipped on water from a leaking fridge and was airlifted to a hospital in Tenerife for urgent treatment.
While the exact cause of these deaths and illnesses is yet to be determined, Tui has stated that it is investigating the claims after the affected families, along with numerous other individuals, sought legal representation from Irwin Mitchell.
According to Jatinder Paul, a serious injury lawyer at the firm, they are currently representing over 1,500 people who fell ill following visits to Cape Verde. He expressed astonishment at the high number of cases, emphasizing the need to address the concerns regarding hygiene standards in the country.
Tui has responded by assuring that they are thoroughly looking into the claims and ensuring that customers receive appropriate care and support if they fall ill during their vacations. The company also noted that some individuals may not report their illnesses or seek assistance while on holiday, which may limit the assistance Tui can provide.
