A British tourist who found himself in a life-threatening situation has shared his harrowing experience of fending off a bull shark during a near-fatal encounter in the Caribbean.
Peter Smith, aged 66, was swimming near the shores of Tobago in April 2024 when the attack occurred unexpectedly in shallow waters on what was supposed to be a peaceful conclusion to his vacation with his wife and friends. Mr. Smith, a retired IT professional from Hertfordshire, narrated that the incident took place during the final hour of their trip as he entered the sea.

Reacting instinctively, he decided to fight back. Recounting the struggle, he said, “I began hitting the shark. I was not entirely sure what I was aiming to achieve, but I kept striking it. I can honestly say I have never hit anything as forcefully as I did that shark.”
Despite his efforts, the shark persisted in its attack, biting his leg, arm, and abdomen. Mr. Smith explained, “After striking my leg, it proceeded to attack my left arm and then my stomach. The situation escalated rapidly, and I lost a significant amount of blood.”
His companions in the water nearby rushed to assist in driving away the shark and calling for help, allowing Mr. Smith to be rescued. On reaching the shore, his wife, Joanna, was alarmed by the commotion and rushed to the water’s edge. She recalled, “I entered the water and saw his severe injuries. I could see
