Former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby has been handed a whole life order for the murder of seven infants and the attempted murder of seven more during her tenure at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015-2016. This case has been labeled as one of the most egregious instances of serial killings in recent UK healthcare history. Despite her conviction, concerns have been raised by a group of advocates regarding the validity of the evidence used in her trial.
Letby’s defense lawyer, Mark McDonald, featured in the Netflix documentary “The Investigation of Lucy Letby,” has contended that the medical evidence presented was flawed. He has submitted a file to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) in pursuit of a retrial.
Originally from a tranquil neighborhood in Hereford, Letby grew up as the only child of Susan and John. She attended local comprehensive schools, including Hereford Sixth Form College, before pursuing a nursing degree at university. Following her training in Chester, she commenced her nursing career at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2011.
Her parents celebrated Letby’s graduation with honors by publishing a message in the local newspaper alongside a photo of her in a graduation cap. Letby was also featured in the Chester Standard for her involvement in a baby grow fundraising campaign for the neonatal unit, expressing her satisfaction in witnessing infants’ progress and supporting their families.
Letby was arrested by Cheshire Police as part of Operation Hummingbird, which investigated a spike in unexplained infant collapses and deaths at the hospital. Her spree, spanning from June 2015 to June 2016, targeted the most vulnerable victims. Following a lengthy trial, Letby was convicted in August 2023 of seven counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder.
In a subsequent trial, she was found guilty of another attempted murder charge. Letby has received 15 whole life sentences, ensuring she will spend the remainder of her life incarcerated.
Despite the convictions, Letby’s legal team, led by Mark McDonald, remains confident in securing a retrial. They have assembled a group of experts challenging the safety of her convictions and asserting her innocence. The disputed medical evidence, particularly concerning the attributed causes of death like air embolism and insulin poisoning, is under scrutiny.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that certain infants displayed signs of skin discoloration or marks consistent with air embolism. However, a group of senior clinicians, including Dr. Shoo Lee, contested this interpretation, stating that the prosecution misinterpreted research on air embolism.
The validity of the insulin poisoning cases was also questioned. A file was submitted to the CCRC in February 2025 for investigation. The CCRC is examining the potential for the Court of Appeal to overturn the convictions based on new evidence challenging the medical testimony presented in the original trials.
