Naz Shah recalls a distressing childhood incident when she witnessed her father assaulting her mother at the tender age of five. This traumatic event led her to realize the importance of protecting her mother, Zoora, which became her primary focus in the years that followed.
As a young adult, Naz faced further challenges when her mother was imprisoned for murder, and their family was abandoned by her abusive father, leaving them in dire circumstances. Living in impoverished conditions, Naz and her siblings even contracted tuberculosis while staying in unsanitary environments.
The family’s plight worsened when a community leader, Mohamed Azam, who initially offered assistance, began assaulting Zoora, leading to a series of tragic events. Zoora resorted to lacing sweets with arsenic to defend herself and her daughters from further abuse, ultimately resulting in her imprisonment.
Despite facing adversity, Naz persisted in seeking justice for her mother, eventually revealing the true story behind Zoora’s actions through the efforts of activist groups like Southall Black Sisters. The campaign for Zoora’s release bore fruit when her prison sentence was reduced, allowing her to reunite with her family after years of separation.
Reflecting on her tumultuous past, Naz acknowledges the hardships she endured and the resilience she developed over the years. Her journey from a challenging upbringing to becoming a prominent Member of Parliament and trade envoy exemplifies her unwavering determination to combat injustice and inequality.
