“Half of Graduates Regret Student Loans: Survey”

Date:

Half of recent graduates regret taking out student loans, a new survey reveals. According to a study by Obsurvant, only 50% of respondents felt adequately informed when deciding to pursue higher education, while just 54% believed their university experience had equipped them for significant financial choices.

The research highlighted that confidence in dealing with numbers played a crucial role in how well-informed students felt. Those who were highly confident in math were more likely to understand the long-term implications of their loans compared to those lacking confidence.

Currently, universities in the UK can charge up to £9,535 per year for standard full-time courses, with fees expected to rise to around £10,000 due to inflation adjustments. The National Union of Students (NUS) has criticized the government, likening it to a “loan shark” for burdening students with substantial debts that can be subject to sudden repayment hikes.

Lord Agnew, former Treasury minister and Chair of the Numeracy for Life Committee, emphasized the impact of numeracy skills on student loan decisions. He pointed out that many borrowers now regret their loans due to a lack of understanding of the costs involved, labeling it as the “Innumeracy Tax.”

The issue of student loan transparency has been a subject of contention, with financial expert Martin Lewis describing Plan 2 student loans as a contractual violation. Graduates who took out loans between 2012 and 2023 are required to repay 9% of their earnings over £29,385, a threshold that will remain frozen from 2027 to 2030, contrary to initial promises of annual uprating in line with earnings.
