An inquiry into the demise of a drag performer whose body was discovered beneath a stack of cardboard containers was presented with video footage depicting the final moments of their life.
Darren Meah-Moore, aged 39, a drag artist known for appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race and a registered sex offender, was found deceased in an alley in central Cardiff. Meah-Moore, who went by the stage names Crystal Couture and CC Quinn, was last sighted fully dressed in drag, sporting makeup and a blonde wig, leaving the Pulse nightclub in downtown Cardiff.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the married drag performer engaged in sexual activities with multiple men that night before encountering an individual with a dog in the early morning hours on the street – and proceeded to engage in intimate relations with both.
Surveillance footage from the evening captured Meah-Moore interacting with two men and appearing on camera multiple times during the encounters. However, he was not seen after a third encounter with an individual who later testified that his dog was involved in a sexual act with the drag artist.
The individual, whose identity remains confidential due to legal restrictions, disclosed that he accompanied Meah-Moore to a secluded parking area and engaged in sexual activities with him. He mentioned attempting to discourage the dog’s involvement, but Meah-Moore allegedly insisted otherwise. The individual expressed surprise at the situation but decided not to intervene as it seemed consensual.
Following the encounter, the individual stated that Meah-Moore fell asleep and couldn’t be awakened. Subsequent tests revealed the presence of both human and non-human semen in Meah-Moore’s body, with DNA matching that of the individual’s dog. Despite these findings, pathologists concluded that the death was not caused by physical trauma.
Further examinations were conducted to determine if Meah-Moore had an allergic reaction to dogs, with Coroner David Regan suggesting that the sudden death might be linked to exposure to dog semen. However, Detective Superintendent Paul Raikes clarified that while Meah-Moore had a sensitivity to dogs, it couldn’t be definitively tied to the cause of death.
The initial medical report cited the cause of death as sudden death in a man with bronchial asthma who had consumed alcohol and engaged in sexual activities, including anal intercourse.
The owner of the dog was briefly detained on suspicion of manslaughter but was subsequently released without charges. Meah-Moore was reported missing by his spouse the next day, and a club worker recalled seeing him enter a nearby car park.
Nightclub manager Sean Rogers, upon learning of the disappearance, went to investigate the car park and discovered Meah-Moore’s body concealed under flattened cardboard boxes. Despite efforts to revive him, Meah-Moore was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members and friends remembered him as a caring individual who played a significant role in Cardiff’s LGBTQ+ community.
An earlier inquiry revealed that the exact cause of death was pending final assessment by the pathologist. Meah-Moore’s family requested privacy during their time of mourning. The individual had a criminal history, having been previously convicted of rape and breaching a sex offender’s order.
The Pontypridd inquest, scheduled to span four days, is ongoing.
