The Met Office has identified specific regions in the UK where snowfall is likely today, with 26 areas potentially experiencing wintry conditions.
Multiple weather alerts for snow, ice, and wind have been issued by the national meteorological agency this week. There is a possibility of further snowfall today.
According to the Met Office, rain is forecasted to move northward across the country today, potentially becoming heavy in certain areas. This precipitation may transition into snow in three regions – North Wales, the Pennines, and the Scottish mountains.
The Met Office’s outlook mentions, “Rain will progress northwards throughout the day, with chances of heavy downpours and potential snowfall in North Wales, the Pennines, and Scottish mountains. Northern regions can expect strong winds with average temperatures.”
In total, 26 counties or council areas in Scotland make up North Wales, the Pennines, and the Scottish mountains.
The Met Office anticipates the possibility of more snowfall in parts of England and Scotland later this month. In its forecast for February 9 to 18, the agency states, “Rainfall is expected to be highest in western areas, including regions prone to flooding. As rain bands move northward, there is a chance of snow in northern England and Scotland, particularly in elevated areas. Strong winds may also develop, especially along coastlines. Overall temperatures are likely to remain near normal, with colder conditions more prevalent in the north.”
Looking ahead to February 19 to March 5, the Met Office suggests continued hill snowfall, stating, “Expect variable conditions across the UK during this period. Low-pressure systems are likely to bring showers or extended periods of rain, potentially heavy, across much of the UK, with hill snow expected in the north. Periods of gusty winds are also possible, particularly near coastlines. Temperatures are expected to hover around average or slightly above average levels.”
