“West Nile Virus Outbreak Threatens Spanish Tourist Hotspots”

Date:

Two popular tourist destinations in Spain are on high alert following multiple cases of the potentially deadly West Nile virus. Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in Fuengirola and Mijas, which are frequented by many British visitors annually. The Andalusian government has issued alerts for Bollullos de la Mitación, Fuengirola, and Las Lagunas in Mijas.

Health authorities have extended the alert period for at least four weeks or until no new cases are reported. Enhanced monitoring of insects, animals, and people is underway, with public warnings being disseminated through pharmacies and medical professionals. Five individuals have been diagnosed so far, with the first case identified in Coria del Río.

A spokesperson from the health department mentioned that the situation is being closely monitored through a surveillance program. Several municipalities in Andalusia are now under alert, with measures in place to prevent further spread of the virus. Authorities are urging the public to take precautions, especially vulnerable individuals, by using mosquito repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating stagnant water sources.

The West Nile virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and can lead to severe health complications. Symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, and in rare cases, neuroinvasive diseases. Older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk. In the past, Andalusia has reported fatalities due to the virus, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and public awareness.
