Russian General Linked to Putin Shot in Moscow Assassination Bid

Date:

A high-ranking Russian military officer was shot and critically injured outside Moscow today in an apparent assassination attempt. The victim, identified as Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, known to have ties to Russian President Putin, was attacked as he left his apartment early in the morning. Alexeyev, who is believed to have been involved in various controversial activities, including the 2018 Salisbury poisonings that resulted in the death of a British citizen, was rushed to a nearby hospital after sustaining three gunshot wounds to his chest.

The incident has shocked the local community, with witnesses describing the harrowing scene of finding the wounded general on the ground, covered in blood. Russian media reports suggest that Alexeyev had a history of orchestrating military operations, including the Salisbury poisonings and other clandestine activities in Ukraine. The shooting is currently under investigation by Russian authorities, who are considering various motives, including a possible connection to internal or foreign adversaries.

Alexeyev’s involvement in the Salisbury poisonings, where Russian agents attempted to assassinate former spies with a Novichok nerve agent, had garnered international attention and led to sanctions against him by the US and the European Union. Despite these controversies, Alexeyev had received accolades in Russia, including a prestigious military award from President Putin for his alleged bravery and service to the country.

The Kremlin has been briefed on the situation, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressing hope for the general’s recovery. The attack on Alexeyev has raised concerns about potential retaliation or further escalation in tensions between Russia and other nations.
