The Ministry of Defence has provided an important update regarding a ship that may be dispatched as numerous British citizens seek assistance amidst missile and drone incidents in the Middle East.
The Royal Navy has readied a support vessel, RFA Lyme Bay, for potential deployment to the eastern Mediterranean to aid stranded British nationals. This ship is equipped with aviation and medical capabilities, making it suitable for humanitarian and disaster relief operations.
Over 100,000 British individuals have notified the UK government of their presence as restricted air travel and flight cancellations have resulted in travel disruptions.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence stated that RFA Lyme Bay has been placed on heightened alert as a precautionary measure in case assistance is required for maritime duties in the eastern Mediterranean. The vessel is currently stationed in Gibraltar and features medical facilities and aircraft platforms.
In the same context, the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon is scheduled to be dispatched to the eastern Mediterranean to safeguard Cyprus and RAF bases from potential drone or missile attacks by Iran and its affiliates. RAF Akrotiri suffered damage recently in an incident involving an Iranian Shahed drone.
Despite Cypriot officials deeming the damage to the base as “limited,” the UK Government decided to bolster regional security by sending the ship. However, there has been criticism from Cyprus, accusing Britain of delayed action.
Defence Secretary John Healey announced that the warship will depart from Portsmouth within the next few days. The HMS Dragon, valued at £1 billion, boasts dimensions of 152.4m in length, 21.2m in width, and a displacement of 8,000 to 8,500 tonnes.
The primary function of this vessel is to protect other ships by detecting and neutralizing enemy threats through its Sea Viper anti-air missile system.
The HMS Prince of Wales, one of the UK’s two aircraft carriers, was also placed on heightened alert, but plans to deploy the vessel have reportedly been canceled. Officials suggested that deployment to a different region worldwide might be considered instead.
The Ministry of Defence clarified that the HMS Prince of Wales has always been on high readiness, with preparations being intensified to reduce deployment time.
Some sources indicate that there were no intentions for the ship to travel to the Middle East, with the possibility of deployment to another part of the world being considered instead, as reported by the Financial Times.
