A man in his 80s, identified as Frank Daly, passed away following a bus collision with pedestrians in Dublin’s North Earl Street. The incident occurred yesterday around 12:30 pm when a Bus Éireann vehicle entered a crowded pedestrian zone, hitting several people. Mr. Daly was fatally struck by the bus, which then crashed into a lamppost near Guineys store. Two other pedestrians, a male in his 20s and a female in her 30s, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized. The female bus driver is also receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities plan to interview the driver once she is released from the hospital and are investigating how the bus deviated from its intended route onto Marlborough Street. Initial findings suggest it was an accident, but investigators are exploring all possibilities. CCTV footage is being reviewed, and Bus Éireann confirmed the bus was not in service during the incident.
The double decker bus has been towed away, and North Earl Street has reopened to pedestrians. Although the crash site has been cleared, evidence of the accident remains, including a damaged shop front and displaced traffic cones.
Bus Éireann expressed deep sorrow over the fatality and injuries caused by the collision with pedestrians. CEO Jean O’Sullivan conveyed condolences to the deceased’s family and all affected individuals. Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin also offered sympathies to those impacted by the tragic event.
