A frustrated motorist in Shefford, Bedfordshire, has taken matters into their own hands by humorously renaming Old Bridge Way multiple times in an attempt to draw attention to the hazardous road conditions. The road, known as “Potholesville” and “Wheel Wrecker Way” by the anonymous driver, has been a source of discontent among locals who have experienced tire damage due to the numerous potholes along the route.
Despite the outcry from residents and drivers, the local council has declined to address the road’s poor state, citing that it is not a public highway within their jurisdiction. This stance has sparked calls from Members of Parliament for urgent action to rectify the situation.
Last August, Labour MP Alistair Strathern stood alongside frustrated residents in a demonstration on the troubled road, displaying placards highlighting the dire pothole situation, with some referring to the road as the Bedrock Grand Canyon.
Describing the road as having around 60 craters up to eight inches deep and 12 inches wide, local business owner Dave Price shared his struggles navigating the damaged road with his burger van. Despite the ongoing signage alterations, the culprit behind the changes remains a mystery to those in the area.
Residents like Sarah Cooper have expressed concerns about the dangerous conditions on Old Bridge Way, with reports of drivers needing tire replacements after encountering the treacherous potholes. Cooper emphasized the worsening state of the road over the years and the potential risks it poses to motorists, particularly those unfamiliar with the area.
The individual responsible for the sign alterations, cleverly dubbed the “Banksy of Shefford,” remains unidentified, adding a touch of mystery to the ongoing campaign for road repairs. However, Central Bedfordshire Council has clarified that the section of Old Bridge Way causing concern is not under their jurisdiction as it is not a public highway, and they are in discussions with relevant authorities to address the issue.
