A man brandishing a firearm threatened police officers with violence during a tense confrontation with armed law enforcement. Christopher Swann, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, encountered officers responding to a call about a suspected weapon at a residence in Cramlington, Northumberland. Upon noticing the firearm, regular officers retreated, prompting the dispatch of armed police who were authorized to use lethal force if necessary.
At Newcastle Crown Court, it was revealed that Swann, who was severely unwell, had been playing loud music before issuing threats to the officers. The prosecutor informed the court that Swann warned of harm if the officers entered, specifically mentioning shooting them in the head. Negotiators attempted to communicate with Swann, who alternated between cooperating and becoming agitated, damaging property and throwing objects out of a window. Reports suggested he seemed under the influence of substances and expressed fondness for cannabis.
Swann claimed to have military experience and mentioned searching for his firearm. Concerned citizens alerted the authorities on May 13, leading to a significant police response. Eventually, Swann surrendered, exiting through a broken window and complying with instructions to lie down. Law enforcement recovered a non-functional black air weapon, the item initially reported as a firearm.
Swann, admitting to consuming a large amount of whisky, stated he discovered the weapon, which was inoperable and lacked ammunition, merely keeping it as a memento. He denied pointing it at anyone or making threats. Expert analysis confirmed the air pistol’s poor condition, rendering it unusable for testing due to defects.
Having a history of convictions, Swann pleaded guilty to possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear. Court proceedings highlighted his paranoid schizophrenia as a severe and treatment-resistant form of the illness. His defense attorney, Liam O’Brien, described Swann as mentally unstable, off medication, and consuming alcohol at the time, attributing some responsibility to systemic failures.
O’Brien expressed gratitude that Swann cooperated with authorities, preventing a potentially lethal outcome. Swann, through his attorney, extended an apology, acknowledging the stress the situation caused the police. Judge Stephen Earl remarked on the potentially tragic consequences of the incident.
Due to his debilitating mental health condition, Swann received a hospital order with restrictions as part of his sentencing.
