UK Braces for Severe Cold Snap & Snowstorms

Date:

Britain is on track for a severe cold snap as new snow maps indicate an extended period of blizzard-like weather conditions. Forecasts project a shift to colder temperatures in mid-February, potentially bringing snowfall as wintry weather grips the nation. The Met Office anticipates the establishment of colder air, heightening the risk of snow across various regions in the UK.

Various weather experts and models are cautioning about continued wintry threats throughout the month, with potential snowfall, icy conditions, and travel disruptions if colder air masses move in. By February 17, snow is expected to reach as far south as the Midlands, while southern England may experience drier conditions.

Recent snow and ice events have already caused disturbances in parts of the UK, with warnings issued for areas like northern England, Wales, and Scotland, where snow and freezing rain have been predicted, leading to potential travel disruptions. Weather projections from WXCHARTS suggest an upcoming period of snowfall, with indications of widespread coverage in Scotland and northern England before progressing southward.

In more extreme model scenarios, extensive regions of the UK are highlighted in purple, typically indicating heavier or more widespread snowfall, extending from Scotland into parts of England and Wales. However, forecasters emphasize the volatility of snow predictions, particularly in the UK’s changeable climate where slight temperature shifts can alter outcomes, making long-term snow forecasts challenging.

Even in the event of snow, it may be sporadic in certain areas, with mixed precipitation types like rain, sleet, and hill snow potentially dominating, especially in northern regions. Extended outlooks suggest unsettled weather ahead, with low-pressure systems likely to bring rain, strong winds, and intermittent wintry conditions rather than continuous snowfall.

The Met Office underscores the complexities of pinpointing exact snowfall locations and timing, particularly beyond a few days, stating that predominantly cyclonic patterns are expected to prevail over the UK. While colder conditions may become more widespread initially, the possibility of snow remains, with milder and wetter conditions likely persisting in the far south. Towards the period’s end, the track of Atlantic depressions may shift northward, maintaining unsettled weather with rain, potential wind gusts, and the chance of lingering colder conditions in the northeast.
