Lucy Harrison, 23, and her boyfriend Sam Littler were in Texas visiting her father and his family. Tragically, just before their return flight to the UK, Lucy sustained a gunshot wound to her chest at her father’s home in Prosper on January 10, 2025, from a shot fired by another individual.
Despite the circumstances, no one faced charges for the young woman’s death. Lucy’s mother, Jane Coates, 49, recounted how she was informed of her daughter’s passing in the middle of the night by Sam’s mother knocking on her door at 2 am on January 11. Jane expressed her disbelief at the news, highlighting the surreal and devastating moment of realization.
Jane expressed frustration over the lack of communication regarding the investigation into Lucy’s death in the US. She criticized the delayed contact from Cheshire Police and the absence of updates until shortly before the inquest. Despite the grand jury’s decision not to prosecute anyone for Lucy’s death, Jane emphasized the need for improved communication from authorities.
Following Lucy’s passing, Jane and Sam faced challenges accessing information about the investigation. It took over a month for them to reach out to the Attorney General for details, and they were only assigned a victim support worker from the Foreign Office in April, prompting an apology from the government department for the delay.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Jane and Sam continue to mourn Lucy’s loss, with Sam returning to work while receiving counseling. Jane, now back at work as a deputy school manager, shared the lingering sense that Lucy might still return, describing moments of false hope in daily routines.
