A man who was arrested following a shooting incident near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner reportedly confessed to police that he intended to shoot officials from the Trump administration. The suspect, identified as Cole Thomas Allen, a teacher and video game developer, allegedly did not specify targeting President Trump but mentioned aiming at administration officials, according to law enforcement sources cited by CBS News. Reports indicated that the shooting involved at least five to eight gunshots.
The 31-year-old suspect, originally from Torrance, California, managed to infiltrate the dinner as a guest. Authorities revealed that Allen was equipped with various weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives. He allegedly breached a security checkpoint at the hotel and fired at a Secret Service agent from close range, who luckily survived due to wearing a bullet-proof vest.
Law enforcement officials stated that the suspect was not previously known to authorities and had no criminal history. It was disclosed that the armed individual had attended the event at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where the incident occurred.
Washington Metropolitan Police Department’s interim chief, Jeffrey Carroll, mentioned, “We do believe he was a guest here at the hotel. We have secured a room here in the hotel, and again, we’ll go through the appropriate procedures to determine what was inside there.”
Former President Donald Trump shared an image of the apprehended gunman and indicated during a press conference that the suspect acted alone, labeling him as a “lone wolf whack job.”
