“EMT Dismissed for Inappropriate Behavior with Suicidal Woman”

Date:

A healthcare professional was dismissed from his position after inappropriate behavior with a suicidal woman in an emergency ambulance situation. Ivan Perkins, 42, an NHS Emergency Medical Technician, faced allegations of unprofessional conduct by treating the woman in a manner that was deemed inappropriate and unhelpful. During a tribunal, where Perkins claimed discrimination, he suggested to the woman that joining a gym might improve her mental health.

Perkins, also a qualified fitness trainer, offered to create a training and diet plan for the woman, exchanging messages with her through his Facebook account under the alias “Kai Perfect.” Despite the woman expressing thoughts of self-harm, Perkins did not escalate the situation to proper authorities. Following her suicide attempt, Perkins met with the woman, brought her flowers, but failed to notify authorities of the incident, leading to his dismissal by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

In an attempt to contest his dismissal, Perkins alleged racial discrimination, but his claim was dismissed by the employment tribunal. The hearing revealed that Perkins had been employed by the trust since 2017. Perkins defended his actions, stating his confidence in winning the appeal.

During an incident in August 2022, Perkins engaged with a patient contemplating self-harm, offering personal advice as a fitness trainer. The tribunal disclosed that Perkins provided his contact information to the patient and encouraged her to reach out if needed, disregarding proper protocols. Subsequent interactions involved Perkins attempting to provide support outside of professional boundaries, including buying gifts and meeting the woman at a bridge where she expressed suicidal intentions.

Months later, in October 2022, another ambulance crew attended to the same patient, uncovering Perkins’ unprofessional conduct. The crew was informed of Perkins’ inappropriate interactions with the patient, prompting an investigation. Perkins was ultimately dismissed in February 2023 after failing to address the situation appropriately. The tribunal rejected his claims of race discrimination due to insufficient evidence supporting his allegations.
