The family of an elderly woman who was found deceased in her home has expressed their heartfelt tribute to her, describing her as a caring mother. Meanwhile, a man who was taken into custody on suspicion of her murder is currently in critical condition.

Rita Rowley, aged 84, was found at her residence on Woodlands Grove in Prees Higher Heath, Whitchurch, Shropshire, on January 27. Alongside her, an 80-year-old man was also discovered with severe injuries at the property.

The man, who was apprehended on suspicion of the crime, remains hospitalized in critical condition. West Mercia Police have confirmed that no other individuals are being sought in connection with Rita’s demise. Her children have fondly remembered their mother as a devoted volunteer for charity, an animal enthusiast, and an avid gardener. Despite battling Alzheimer’s, they emphasized that Rita remained lively and engaging.

In an official statement conveyed through the police, the family stated, “We want to honor our beloved mother Rita, who, along with our late father Colin, instilled in us values of compassion and kindness.

“Throughout her life, she strived for independence and self-sufficiency. She met our father in Malta while he was serving in the RAF, and boldly relocated to a new country, leaving her family in Malta. A skilled seamstress, she had a passion for fashion and always maintained a stylish appearance.

“Our parents shared a passion for travel and meeting new people. Even after our father’s passing, our mother continued to explore, either solo or with friends, both domestically and abroad, particularly to her cherished Malta. She adored music and dancing, with a special fondness for Elvis Presley and Johnny Mattis. Music was a constant presence in her home, though she also enjoyed contemporary tunes.

“Her love for gardens and flowers was profound. Upon moving to Higher Heath, she cultivated her vegetable patch and established a beautiful flower garden.

“She excelled at plant cultivation, skillfully propagating from cuttings and seeds, readily sharing her expertise with others.

“Visiting gardens for inspiration and appreciation brought her immense joy. Animals held a special place in her heart; she regularly fed stray cats, who eagerly awaited her care.

“She took pleasure in nurturing garden birds, evident from the numerous bird feeders in her garden. Her favorite, a Robin, would visit daily, expecting its meal.

“Her enduring Catholic faith, coupled with her friendly demeanor, fostered a strong sense of community. Volunteering for over two decades at the Age UK daycare center in Whitchurch, she selflessly assisted others.

“She also volunteered her time to drive individuals to appointments, accompany them on shopping trips, or aid with household tasks.

“Throughout her life, she demonstrated unwavering dedication, offering support and encouragement to her family. Despite the challenges posed by Alzheimer’s, her vibrant personality shone through. We kindly request privacy during this difficult time.”

Detective Inspector Joanne Delahay of West Mercia Police expressed condolences to the family of the deceased woman, emphasizing that the incident appears to be isolated, with no broader threat to public safety.
