Berlin Airport Strike Grounds 445 Flights

Date:

Hundreds of flights have been canceled as a major airport was compelled to suspend all inbound and outbound journeys, leading to travel disruption for numerous British travelers.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport has been brought to a standstill due to strikes, resulting in 445 flights being grounded and passengers facing chaos.

The strike action, initiated by Verdi service workers demanding higher wages and affecting 2,000 employees, has brought the major German air hub to a standstill, with approximately 57,000 passengers caught up in the strikes.

British Airways, easyJet, and Ryanair are among the UK airlines impacted by the closure, affecting travelers scheduled to depart from London, Manchester, Bristol, and Edinburgh who are now left scrambling to make alternate plans.

A total of 23 flights from the UK to Berlin have been impacted, while other British travelers are struggling to leave the city, adding to the thousands affected by the airport disruption.

In an announcement, the airport stated that no scheduled passenger flights will be operating on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The airport has informed its partners, including airlines, ground handling service providers, security companies, and local businesses, about this situation.

Passengers are advised to contact their airlines or tour operators for rebooking and alternative travel options. Airlines will provide affected passengers with alternative routes or refunds, but the disruption may persist, with a crucial negotiation date between unions and management set for March 25.

Airport executive Aletta von Massenbach criticized the “disproportionate” strike action, citing the already tense situation exacerbated by the conflict in Iran.

Flights to and from the Middle East from the UK and Europe are experiencing significant disruptions due to the ongoing war with Iran. British Airways recently announced the cancellation of flights to Amman, Bahrain, Dubai, and Tel Aviv until May 31, and flights to Doha until April 30, due to the conflict.
