During the hearing, it was revealed that the youth, now sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years for Leo’s murder, assaulted Mrs. Mann by striking her multiple times with her own walking stick. Subsequently, he expressed a desire for help while warning her not to report the incident. Following the attack, Mrs. Mann, who sustained severe injuries including bruises, a broken nose, fractured ribs, and fingers requiring surgery, expressed her fear of dying to a passerby who came to her aid.
Prosecutor Rachel Brand KC detailed the series of assaults on elderly women leading up to the murder. The perpetrator targeted Christine Canty on January 20 and Diane Copplestone on January 21, just moments before the fatal attack on Leo. The youth admitted to causing grievous bodily harm to Mrs. Mann and Mrs. Canty and assault occasioning actual bodily harm to Mrs. Copplestone.
Mrs. Mann, in her victim impact statement, described the physical and emotional toll of the attack, including dizziness, instability, and the need for prolonged care and recovery. The prosecutor highlighted the callous nature of the assaults, emphasizing the lasting trauma inflicted on the victims.
