“Iranian Pair Apprehended near UK’s Nuclear Submarine Base”

Date:

An individual from Iran was apprehended following an attempt to access the naval base where the United Kingdom’s four nuclear submarines are stationed.

The arrested man, aged 34, along with a woman whose nationality remains unidentified, approached the entrance of HM Naval Base Clyde, also known as Faslane, on Thursday while traveling in a vehicle.

As reported by The Times, the duo was denied entry due to not having security passes. Subsequently, they were observed behaving suspiciously in the vicinity and were subsequently detained.

A spokesperson from Police Scotland confirmed the incident, stating that on Thursday, March 19, 2026, around 5pm, they were informed of two individuals trying to enter HM Naval Base Clyde. The 34-year-old man and 31-year-old woman have been taken into custody in connection with this incident, and investigations are ongoing.

No further information has been disclosed regarding the nature of the suspicious behavior, including whether the pair attempted to take photos or engage in other prohibited activities at the base.

A statement from a Royal Navy spokesperson mentioned that Police Scotland had arrested two individuals who unsuccessfully tried to access HM Naval Base Clyde on March 19. Due to an ongoing investigation, no additional comments will be provided.

Faslane serves as the home to four Trident-armed ballistic missile submarines, which are integral to the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent.

Additionally, the base accommodates the Royal Navy’s seven Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines capable of launching precision Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles targeting locations hundreds of miles inland.

Meanwhile, in a London court, two men faced charges on Thursday for conducting “hostile” surveillance last year of the UK’s Jewish community on behalf of Iran.

Iranian-British national Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, and 22-year-old Iranian citizen Alireza Farasati are accused of engaging in activities likely to assist a foreign intelligence service from July 9 to August 15 last year.

Prosecution lawyer Louise Attrill indicated that the defendants are suspected of aiding the Iranian intelligence service by conducting hostile surveillance on sites and individuals associated with the Israeli and Jewish community, including the Israeli embassy in London, a Jewish community center, a college, and Britain’s oldest synagogue.

During the court hearing, neither defendant entered a plea, though Farasati’s lawyer expressed an intent to challenge the accusation.
