American Family Takes Financial Hit for British Lifestyle

Date:

A man left his high-paying job in the United States to move to England with his family, seeking British humor and lifestyle. Tom Bateman, 35, and his wife Brittany, 36, had been living in the US for 17 years but decided to relocate to England to raise their four children.

Tom, who previously held a lucrative corporate marketing position earning over $200,000 (£150,000) annually, felt a desire to escape the pressures of success and missed the wit and banter unique to British culture. He opted for an 80% pay cut to work alongside his father, Phil, 64, teaching bike lessons for children in Bradford, earning £30,000 per year. The couple embraced a simpler lifestyle after selling their possessions in the US.

Reflecting on his decision, Tom expressed a need to contribute more and be closer to his family, emphasizing that his choice was not a midlife crisis but a desire for change. He and Brittany met in York in 2007 and after years of transatlantic travel, settled in California, where they got married.

Despite enjoying their time in the US, Tom felt a strong pull towards British culture, particularly the humor and social nuances that he found hard to explain to non-Brits. His longing for familial bonds and the unexpected loss of his older brother in 2016 influenced his decision to return to England.

Brittany, who homeschools their children, shares Tom’s excitement for the move, citing the appeal of the English countryside and the cozy village life. The family, including their two dogs, Charlie and Mabel, are preparing for the transition, looking forward to rediscovering the Yorkshire Dales without the constraints of short vacations.

As the relocation date nears, Tom contemplates whether the move will feel like a prolonged visit, acknowledging that the real impact of the decision may only sink in once they realize they are not returning to Idaho. He eagerly anticipates reconnecting with British favorites like Greggs, curry, and a pint in the local pub, embracing the upcoming chapter in their lives with optimism and nostalgia.
