“Urgent Tsunami Evacuation Ordered in New Zealand”

Date:

An urgent evacuation directive has been issued in New Zealand due to the potential threat of a tsunami following a strong earthquake. The seismic event, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, occurred 40 km north of Te Anau on New Zealand’s South Island, as reported by New Zealand Civil Defence.

Authorities have instructed individuals residing near the coast in specified areas to immediately relocate to the nearest high ground, away from tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as feasible. The National Emergency Management Agency has cautioned that the initial tsunami wave may not be the most substantial, emphasizing that tsunami activity could persist for hours, necessitating continued vigilance until the warning is rescinded.

Residents in other regions who experienced a significant or prolonged earthquake are advised to promptly move to higher ground, away from potential tsunami zones. The National Emergency Management Agency and ESNZ Science are actively monitoring the situation and will furnish a hazard map for all regions at the earliest opportunity.

The earthquake’s epicenter, located in Fiordland National Park, a renowned tourist spot for its stunning fjords and trekking paths, was registered as a 5.9 magnitude on the Moment magnitude scale by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The warning extends along approximately 1340 miles of coastline on the southwest coast of New Zealand’s South Island.

Following the initial tremor at 9.14pm local time on Wednesday, situated at a depth of 53km, authorities have identified the quake’s epicenter as 40 km north of Te Anau. The west coast of the South Island, spanning from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point, faces a risk of “land inundation.”

Residents have been advised to evacuate to elevated areas and to utilize walking, running, or cycling to mitigate potential traffic congestion. Individuals are directed not to return until receiving an official clearance message from Civil Defence.

New Zealand Civil Defence has issued a Tsunami Warning subsequent to the M6.3 earthquake near Te Anau. Land inundation is expected in specific areas, notably the West Coast of the South Island from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point. Immediate evacuation is advised, regardless of whether the earthquake was perceptible in those regions.
