A significant 7.5-magnitude earthquake has struck in the South Pacific Ocean, prompting a frightening warning to residents. The quake, centered at sea 95 miles west of Neiafu, the second largest town in Tonga, occurred on Tuesday evening local time with a depth of approximately 148 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey.
In response, Tonga’s National Disaster Risk Management Office has urged all individuals in the low-lying island nation to immediately relocate to higher ground or inland. Meanwhile, neighboring countries are on alert for potential tsunamis. New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency is assessing the situation to determine any tsunami threat to its shores, emphasizing that if a tsunami is generated, it would take at least two hours to reach New Zealand.
Although there have been no immediate reports of damage, the warning remains in place for Tonga’s residents to stay away from beaches and coastal areas until further notice. Despite the seismic activity, the USGS did not issue a tsunami warning for the region, as the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii stated that the quake’s depth within the earth eliminated the risk of a tsunami.
Tonga, an archipelago in Polynesia comprising 171 islands and a population of over 100,000, is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, prone to seismic and volcanic events. The nation had experienced a deadly tsunami in 2022 triggered by a volcanic eruption.
