“Artemis II Astronauts Quarantine for Moon Mission Launch”

Date:

Artemis II astronauts are currently undergoing quarantine following a significant update from NASA that could lead to an imminent launch. The massive moon rocket has been moved to the launchpad for the second time, with the astronauts observing the process remotely from their isolation facility. The crew, consisting of three Americans and one Canadian, will orbit the moon in their capsule without any intermediate stops.

Pending successful repair work and other necessary preparations, NASA’s Space Launch System is poised to take off as early as April 1 from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The rocket completed its journey from the Vehicle Assembly Building to LC-39B after an overnight voyage on March 19.

Simultaneously, the Artemis II crew, including Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, began a 14-day quarantine on March 18 in anticipation of a potential launch window opening on April 1. Medical professionals will monitor their health during quarantine and conduct final checks to ensure readiness for liftoff.

Dr. Raffi Kuyumjian, the Canadian Space Agency’s flight surgeon, emphasized the importance of the 14-day isolation period before launch due to the incubation period of most infectious diseases. The quarantine measures also extend to support teams, technicians, and optionally, family members of the astronauts.

Artemis II, originally scheduled for a February launch, faced delays due to a helium leak, necessitating remedial work before a new launch attempt. Engineers have now rectified the issue and are optimistic that final tests at the launch pad will pave the way for an early April departure.

NASA aims to launch Artemis II at 6.24pm Eastern Daylight Time on April 1, with backup opportunities available on subsequent days if needed. The mission will involve a 10-day crewed voyage with four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, serving as the exploration vessel.

This mission marks the first human lunar flyby since Apollo 17 in 1972 and sets the stage for Artemis III, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon’s surface.
