“Mother of Teen with Testicular Cancer Urges Early Detection”

Date:

The mother of a teenager who lost his life to testicular cancer is advocating for young individuals to seek help without feeling ashamed. Ewan Jeanes, a resident of Greenock, Inverclyde, succumbed to cancer at the age of 18 on February 6 after a prolonged battle that started when he was just 16 and discovered a lump. Despite initial success following surgery and rounds of chemotherapy for testicular cancer in March 2024, Ewan was later diagnosed with germ cell cancer, a severe variant associated with testicular cancer. His passing occurred at home, surrounded by family, after a month of hospice care.

Samantha Jeanes, his mother, emphasized the importance of regular self-checks and prompt medical attention if any abnormalities are noticed. She stressed the significance of open communication about any changes in testicular health with trusted individuals who can assist in seeking medical aid.

Ewan first noticed the lump while bathing and promptly consulted a GP, leading to the devastating diagnosis in February 2024. Despite the initial belief that cancer had been defeated after treatment, Ewan’s health deteriorated as germ cell cancer emerged, necessitating intensive chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant that unfortunately failed to halt the disease’s progression.

Receiving specialized care at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre before transitioning to hospice care in January, Ewan’s deteriorating condition dashed hopes of survival until Easter, with plans to serve as his brother’s best man dashed by his illness.

Described as a vibrant and resilient individual by close friend Jamie-Leigh Allan, Ewan’s positive outlook and courage in the face of adversity were evident throughout his battle. Although his educational aspirations in social care and criminology were cut short by his illness, Ewan’s unwavering spirit and determination left a lasting impact on those around him.

A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe has already surpassed £3,000 to assist with funeral expenses, reflecting the community’s support for Ewan’s family during this difficult time.
