The Russian government has faced numerous allegations of utilizing unusual poisons to eliminate its adversaries. Notable incidents include the Salisbury Novichok poisonings in 2018, resulting in the death of UK citizen Dawn Sturgess, and the assassination of Putin critic Alexander Litvinenko with polonium-laced tea in London in 2006.
Recent findings by UK and European allies suggest that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny may have met a similar fate, allegedly poisoned with a substance believed to be derived from the poison dart frog, known for its extreme toxicity. Each poison dart frog is said to contain enough poison to kill multiple humans, with just a minuscule amount capable of causing fatality.
Dr. Eric Franssen, a specialist in clinical toxicology and pharmacology, highlighted the potential use of the dart frog’s venom as a discreet and potent weapon against targets due to its challenging detectability in routine toxicology screenings.
Analysis conducted two years after Navalny’s death revealed traces of epibatidine, a toxin found exclusively in dart frogs in South America, not naturally present in Russia, indicating foul play. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper suggested that only the Russian government had the means, motive, and opportunity to administer such a lethal substance to Navalny during his imprisonment.
Despite Russia’s denial and assertion that Navalny’s death was due to high blood pressure and heart arrhythmia, evidence points to a deliberate poisoning. Navalny, a vocal critic of Putin, had previously survived a poisoning attempt in 2020 with Novichok nerve agent before succumbing to the fatal toxin in 2021.
