“Revolut Bank Ordered to Disclose ‘Dodgy Box’ Users to Sky”

Date:

The Irish High Court has approved an order for Revolut Bank UAB to disclose the identities and locations of 304 subscribers and 10 resellers involved in the use of ‘dodgy boxes.’ Sky initiated legal action against Revolut, alleging that subscribers used the banking app to pay for pirated content.

Sky initially sought a Norwich Pharmacal order to obtain information on individuals connected to illicit activities. Sky’s representative, Theo Donnelly, stated that the acquired information would be utilized to pursue legal measures against resellers and some users.

Revolut’s legal counsel, John Freeman, confirmed the company’s neutrality regarding Sky’s request. The legal action stemmed from a case against David Dunbar from Wexford.

David Dunbar was ordered to compensate Sky with €480,000 (£415,000) in damages and €100,000 (£86,000) in costs for operating an illegal streaming service. Additionally, Dunbar faced a €30,000 (£26,000) fine for breaching court orders related to data preservation.

It was revealed that 304 users and 12 resellers transferred funds to Dunbar through Revolut, prompting Sky to seek further details from the bank. Legal actions had already commenced against two of the identified resellers.

Sky is set to receive information on the 304 users via an encrypted spreadsheet within the next 28 days.

The use of ‘dodgy boxes’ and illegal Fire stick devices is considered a severe offense, prompting law enforcement agencies in the UK and Ireland, along with the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), to intensify crackdown efforts.

Recently, a man from Merseyside received a prison sentence for personal involvement in such activities.

Detective Sergeant Adam Dagnall from Merseyside Police’s Cybercrime Unit emphasized the seriousness of illegal streaming, highlighting its links to organized crime and potential risks to users. He urged the public to avoid unauthorized streaming services due to associated security threats.
