Netanyahu Vows to Expand Buffer Zone, Escalate Conflict

Date:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared intentions to expand Israel’s “buffer zone” into southern Lebanon and has vowed to escalate the conflict against Hezbollah. Netanyahu’s recent threats of seizing land in Lebanon have raised tensions between Israel and its neighbor, particularly following Hezbollah’s retaliatory attacks on Israel in response to actions by Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, resulting in the death of Iran’s supreme leader on February 28. Netanyahu emphasized that his military is pushing boundaries in various aspects.

The expansion of the buffer zone is linked to Israel’s ongoing conflict with Iran, with Netanyahu emphasizing the need to dismantle Hezbollah as a primary goal. Netanyahu stressed that the efforts are part of a broader campaign against Iran, aimed at fundamentally altering the situation in Lebanon.

During discussions with Israel’s military chief of staff, Defense Minister Israel Katz outlined plans to secure control over bridges and establish a security zone up to the Litani River in Lebanon, located around 20 miles north of the Israeli border. Katz highlighted the destruction of certain bridges, which were allegedly used by Hezbollah to transport weapons into southern Lebanon.

Netanyahu, in a video message, detailed the establishment of a security zone to prevent incursions towards the Galilee and northern border, expanding it to mitigate threats from anti-tank missiles and create a wider buffer zone. Additionally, Israel’s far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, controversially proposed applying sovereignty over parts of southern Lebanon.

Amid Israel’s continued conflict with Iran and Hezbollah, US actions have been mixed, with the Pentagon deploying ground troops to the Middle East while also presenting Iran with a 15-point peace plan. President Trump expressed uncertainty regarding the possibility of reaching a deal with Iran, criticizing the timing of potential negotiations.

Tensions between Trump and Netanyahu emerged as the Israeli leader suggested US support for a street uprising against the Iranian regime, prompting a sharp response from Trump during a recent phone call. Trump questioned the rationale behind inciting street protests that could lead to violence.

This latest development underscores the complex geopolitical landscape in the region, with ongoing military maneuvers, diplomatic efforts, and conflicting interests among key players.
