The International Atomic Energy Agency has provided a significant update following a fire outbreak at an Iranian nuclear facility.
Reported by the Fars news agency, the Khondab Heavy Water Complex within the Arak Nuclear Complex was targeted twice today. The Israeli Defence Forces issued a warning in Persian before the attacks, indicating their intention to strike military infrastructure in Arak.
Eyewitnesses on Iranian Telegram channels claimed the complex endured approximately 10 hits. Subsequently, the Israeli Defence Forces confirmed hitting the Israeli nuclear facility in Arak.
In a statement, the Israeli Defence Forces declared the strike on the Arak Heavy Water Plant in Central Iran, emphasizing the prevention of Iran’s nuclear weapons program advancement. The IAEA confirmed from Iranian authorities that the Khondab plant was hit, with no radiation threat as there was no declared nuclear material present.
Also, the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization assured no contamination risk from the strikes, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemning the “Israeli crimes” and warning of a “heavy price” to be paid.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps cautioned of retaliatory actions and advised workers at industrial firms in the region with U.S. connections to vacate immediately.
Meanwhile, the IAEA reported no rise in off-site radiation levels following an Israeli assault on Iran’s yellowcake production site in Yazd province. The U.S. and Israel conducted multiple strikes on Iranian industrial and nuclear locations shortly after Israel’s threat to escalate actions against Tehran. Despite conflicting statements, Trump suggested positive progress in war-ending negotiations and granted an extension for Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz.
