Police are currently investigating the tragic death of a teenage tourist in a popular British holiday destination. The body of a 15-year-old girl was discovered floating in the sea near a marina in Puerto Rico, located in the southwest region of Gran Canaria. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 28, when the girl’s mother reported her missing.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact time when the mother contacted the police. However, there are unconfirmed reports suggesting that the girl’s mother called emergency services (999) after she did not meet her family as planned at 8pm on Friday at Amadores Beach in Puerto Rico.
The family was staying in a holiday apartment in Barranco Agua La Perra, a vicinity near the tourist hub in Mogan municipality. Detectives leading the investigation have stated that all possible scenarios are being considered at this stage.
The girl’s body was found approximately 200 meters from the shoreline, close to Puerto Base marina and Balito beach, after several witnesses made emergency calls. Coastguard officials retrieved the body from the sea. The exact time of the official missing persons report being filed is yet to be confirmed.
Initially mistaken for a homeless individual, the body was later identified as the missing girl, prompting the police to notify her mother for identification. The Civil Guard is spearheading the ongoing investigation, with a post-mortem examination scheduled to take place soon.
