A tragic incident occurred in Austria as a tourist lost his life in an avalanche. Federico Giubilato, who was on the verge of turning 42, was buried under the massive 820ft-wide snowslide alongside his friend. While his companion managed to escape with only a hand injury and sought help, Federico, hailing from Bassano del Grappa in northern Italy, unfortunately succumbed to the disaster despite rescue efforts.
The duo was skiing off the designated route during their excursion to Marchkopf, Austria, when the avalanche struck on a fateful Saturday afternoon. Federico, known for his love of extreme sports, had a history of engaging in various adventurous activities like downhill mountain biking, surfing, and climbing, as evidenced by his social media posts. However, his sporting endeavors were briefly interrupted by a severe injury in 2019, requiring an extensive recovery period.
Trapped under approximately 5.2ft (1.6m) of ice during the ordeal, Federico’s unnamed friend miraculously freed himself and alerted authorities. Although a mountain rescue team arrived swiftly via helicopters, it took about half an hour to extricate Federico from the snow. Tragically, by the time he was rescued, the mechanical engineer had already passed away.
The incident at Marchkopf, near Hochfügen in the Zillertal ski region, adds to the recent spate of deadly avalanches, including one in Japan that left 23-year-old Kai Smart in a coma from which he did not recover. Kai’s father, John, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, describing Kai as a courageous and adventurous individual, beloved by many for his diverse interests and vibrant personality.
