“Deadly Avalanches Strike French Alps: British Skier Among Victims”

Date:

A tragic skiing incident claimed the life of a British individual in the French Alps following an avalanche. The victim, a man in his thirties, was skiing off-piste near La Grave when the avalanche hit, resulting in his death along with a Polish companion. In a separate incident in the Valloire area, another person died, and two individuals were severely injured in a second avalanche.

This unfortunate event occurred shortly after two British men, Stuart Leslie, 46, and Shaun Overy, 51, lost their lives in a similar avalanche in the Val d’Isere ski resort. The group had ventured off-piste with an instructor despite a red avalanche alert in the region. The two friends and a French skier were swept away by the snow, ending up in a stream where their bodies were later recovered.

While Stuart Leslie and Shaun Overy were located promptly due to their avalanche transceivers, the third victim took longer to find as the device was submerged in the stream. Authorities suspect that the solo skier above the group may have triggered the avalanche. Despite efforts by rescue teams, the third body was discovered several hours later.

Meteo-France issued an avalanche warning for the Northern Alps and Hautes-Alpes, including La Grave, due to the high avalanche risk caused by forecasted sunny weather leading to ice thawing. The investigations into the avalanche incidents are ongoing to determine the exact causes of these tragic events.
