“Farm Suicide Triggers Gun License Safety Concerns”

Date:

Urgent concerns have arisen following the tragic discovery of a deceased farmer with a gunshot wound in a farm building.

Samuel Dickinson, aged 39, was found dead with a head injury at his farm near Blackrod, Greater Manchester. An inquest concluded that his death was a result of suicide.

Being a holder of both firearms and shotgun licenses, Samuel was found with a gunshot wound in a shed on his family farm. His untimely death prompted a coroner at Bolton Coroner’s Court to highlight potential loopholes in UK gun license regulations, warning of possible future fatalities if corrective measures are not implemented.

According to the inquest, Samuel left his home early on the morning of September 15 last year. Family members notified the authorities when they discovered a missing shotgun from the gun cabinet.

Subsequently, Samuel’s body was located in a farm outbuilding, with the cause of death attributed to the head injury he sustained. Commemorative messages flooded social media platforms, praising Samuel as an exceptional individual and a dear friend to many.

The annual Haigh Aspull and Blackrod Christmas Tractor Run also raised funds in memory of Samuel, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. Michael Pemberton, the Manchester West Area Coroner, issued a report on preventing future deaths following Samuel’s incident.

The report highlighted the need for legislative amendments to ensure that individuals holding firearms licenses report any new health conditions that might impact their license validity. The absence of requirements for medical practices to record firearm license details on medical records was also underscored as a potential risk factor for future tragedies.

The government expressed condolences for the family’s loss and committed to reviewing the coroner’s recommendations. The Home Office confirmed existing protocols mandating applicants to disclose relevant medical information, including mental health conditions, to their doctors during the license application process.

For those in need of emotional support, the Samaritans helpline is available 24/7 at 116 123, or contactable via email or in-person visits to a local branch.
