A tragic incident unfolded as a baby boy lost his life when his mother left him unattended in a hot car to undergo a cosmetic filler procedure. The mother, identified as Maya Hernandez, left her one-year-old child, Amillio Gutierrez, along with her two-year-old in her Toyota Corolla hybrid on a scorching day in Bakersfield, California. The temperatures soared above 37C while she visited a nearby spa.
Reports indicate that Hernandez left the vehicle running with the air conditioning on, but the car’s engine automatically shut off after an hour of inactivity. Authorities suspect the engine might have turned off around 3pm, 1.5 hours before Hernandez claimed to return, with outside temperatures hitting 38C. It is believed that the temperature inside the car could have skyrocketed to a dangerous 60C.
Upon returning to the car, Hernandez found her one-year-old in distress, foaming at the mouth and experiencing a seizure. Emergency services were called, and both children were rushed to the hospital. Tragically, Amillio was pronounced dead, while the two-year-old managed to recover.
Hernandez, facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, accepted a plea deal after a mistrial in a murder trial. She could potentially face a 15-year prison sentence and is scheduled for sentencing in March. The family of the deceased set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Amillio’s funeral, expressing their grief and loss over the heartbreaking incident.
