A tragic incident unfolded as a 13-year-old boy lost his life in a horrifying crocodile attack while attempting to retrieve his football from a river. Muhammad Abidzhar, 13, was playing with friends near the riverbank in Kutai Kartanegara Regency, Indonesia, when the ball fell into the water. Despite efforts to wade 40 feet from the shore to retrieve it at 5 am local time on Monday, he found himself in distress and called out for help once in the Mahakam River.
Witnessed by his friends, Muhammad struggled against the river’s current and was pulled underwater, prompting his companions to rush back to the village for assistance. A coordinated search operation, involving various teams such as the local search and rescue unit, regional disaster management agency, municipal water police, and volunteers, swiftly mobilized to navigate the river using rubber boats and diving gear.
Meiry Sulindra, the head of the Anggana Fire and Rescue Post, highlighted the difficulties of the search due to the river’s high tide and strong currents, exacerbated by the presence of numerous crocodiles in the area. Despite encountering several large crocodiles, including one measuring around 10 feet, rescuers eventually recovered Muhammad’s body approximately 1.6 kilometers downstream from the entry point after hours of searching.
Onlookers gathered along the riverbank as emergency responders retrieved the boy’s body at night. Meiry confirmed that the victim was found floating without any signs of animal involvement. Following the discovery, Muhammad’s body was promptly taken to a funeral home, where an autopsy revealed multiple injuries, including wounds to his left jaw, back, and the back of his head.
Indonesia, known for its diverse crocodile species, faces challenges as conservationists attribute the increased human-crocodile encounters to factors like overfishing, habitat loss, and human encroachment on crocodile habitats due to mining and coastal development activities.
