Turkish Airlines Cancels 18 International Routes

Date:

A leading European airline operating flights to the United Kingdom has decided to cancel services to 18 destinations starting next month. Turkish Airlines has disclosed its plans to halt 18 international routes, affecting travel across Europe, Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East. The changes are scheduled to disrupt travel plans between May and June 2026.

The modifications to the airline’s summer schedule for 2026 could impact flights from Istanbul Airport (IST), a popular location for British holidaymakers. Turkish Airlines is a favored choice among Brits due to its extensive offerings to key UK locations like London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.

This decision is part of a strategic evaluation by the airline to suspend routes with declining demand, particularly those serving less-known destinations. Among the destinations being suspended by Turkish Airlines are Juba, Kinshasa, Luanda, Lusaka, Aqaba, Billund, Bissau, Ferghana, Freetown, Havana, Hurghada, Kirkuk, Leipzig/Halle, Libreville, Monrovia, Najaf, Pointe Noire, and Turkistan.

While these routes will be suspended from May to June 2026, some may not resume until late October 2026 or even as late as March of the following year. Travelers with plans to visit Istanbul need not worry as the airline is prioritizing its high-demand routes.

The suspension of flights to these lesser-known destinations could have an impact on tourism in those countries and limit options for travelers seeking new experiences. Additionally, Turkish Airlines has continued suspending routes to various Iranian cities amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, with these suspensions expected to remain until the end of October 2026.

In recent developments, the airline introduced London Stansted as its third London gateway earlier this year, expanding its network in the UK. This expansion provides British travelers access to over 350 destinations across 133 countries, with the UK and Ireland aiming to have a weekly flight schedule of 168 flights during the summer.

Fuat Fırat, Turkish Airlines Vice President Sales (Middle and Northern Europe), expressed optimism about the UK market, stating that the addition of London Stansted flights strengthens the airline’s presence in London and enhances connectivity. The new route is expected to cater to regional demand while boosting commercial and tourism activities in the region.
