In Cheshire’s affluent ‘Golden Triangle’, the Iranian government’s abandoned grand mansion has become a sore point for locals due to its deteriorating state. The neglected mock Tudor estate, known as Brackendene in Trafford, Greater Manchester, showcases a forlorn appearance after 16 years of neglect, yet holds a potential value of up to £10 million.
Originally acquired by the Iranian government in the 1970s during the reign of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the mansion stands as a relic of past grandeur in the midst of upscale real estate properties. Over the years, it hosted lavish events and housed the consul-general, serving as a hub for diplomatic gatherings and social functions.
Today, haunting drone images reveal the mansion’s desolate condition, with vandalized interiors, overgrown gardens, boarded-up windows, and neglected amenities like the greenhouse and pool. Officially uninhabited since 2010, the property’s decline traces back to the aftermath of the Islamic revolution in 1979, marking a period of diplomatic tension that further led to its deterioration post-2005.
Despite being targeted by vandals and arson attacks that severely damaged the building, recent repairs have been initiated by the Iranian owners, aiming to salvage the property. However, the mansion’s future remains uncertain as it sits on diplomatic grounds, limiting the local council’s ability to intervene through compulsory purchase orders.
