Neil Robertson is set to receive a substantial fine for conceding a frame prematurely during his World Snooker Championship first round match against Pang Junxu. The Australian, a former Crucible champion, mistakenly ended the second frame early due to a miscalculation in points, despite still having a chance to win without needing snookers.
Upon trailing by 47 points with three reds remaining on the table, Robertson made the error of conceding, resulting in a penalty. While players are allowed to concede frames, Robertson’s prior fines during the season escalated the punishment to £2,000. Another similar mistake could lead to a £10,000 fine for Robertson.
Referee Terry Camilleri cautioned Robertson for the error, prompting the player to realize his mistake. Commentary quickly picked up on the blunder, with Ken Doherty remarking on Robertson’s uncharacteristic move. Despite the mishap, Robertson managed to secure a 10-6 victory over Pang Junxu and advance to the quarter-finals, where he will face John Higgins.
In a post-match interview, Robertson expressed relief at avoiding a matchup with Ronnie O’Sullivan, criticizing O’Sullivan’s use of chalk during games. He called for a ban on the particular chalk used by O’Sullivan, citing its negative impact on the game and playing conditions.
Robertson’s tournament journey continues, with the player maintaining his focus on advancing further in the championship.
