Britain’s fresh envoy to the United States implied that America’s primary special partnership is with Israel, as per leaked statements. Christian Turner reportedly expressed his aversion to using the term “special relationship” to depict UK-US connections. Turner described the phrase as outdated and burdened with nostalgia, indicating that Israel might be the sole country with a unique bond with the US. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the deep historical ties between the UK and the US, particularly in defense and security.
These revelations surfaced during a time when US-UK relations were strained due to fallout from the Iran conflict, coinciding with King Charles’ ongoing state visit to America. The Foreign Office clarified that Turner’s comments were made informally at an event involving UK students in Washington DC and do not represent the official stance of the UK government.
In the leaked recording, Turner also discussed the potential crisis resulting from Lord Mandelson’s appointment and its impact on the Prime Minister’s tenure. He further delved into the Labour Party’s rulebook regarding the removal of a Prime Minister, highlighting the challenges faced by the party in initiating such a process.
Regarding the future of the Labour Party and its leadership, Turner speculated that the outcome of the upcoming May elections could determine Keir Starmer’s fate. He suggested that if Labour performs poorly, there might be a push to remove Starmer, but if the party does well, he could potentially continue as leader.
