“Trump Imposes 10% Global Tariff Despite Supreme Court Ruling”

Date:

US President Donald Trump has announced a 10% global tariff on all countries after the Supreme Court rejected his reciprocal tariffs strategy. The previous reciprocal tariffs, imposed on most nations using emergency powers legislation, were invalidated by the US Supreme Court, dealing a blow to Trump’s economic agenda.

Despite the court’s ruling, Trump vowed to proceed with implementing tariffs, accusing the court of being influenced by foreign interests. He declared the new tariff on Truth Social, emphasizing its immediate effectiveness.

During a White House address, Trump asserted his authority to impose tariffs using alternative legislation for national security reasons. He mentioned maintaining existing tariffs and initiating new investigations to safeguard against unfair trade practices.

In response to the ruling, UK officials expressed confidence in maintaining favorable trade relations with the US. The UK had negotiated exemptions for its steel and automotive sectors under previous agreements with Trump, but uncertainties arose following the court decision.

Trump indicated that trade agreements established after the reciprocal tariffs may be affected and replaced with new tariffs. The 10% global tariff is set to remain for approximately five months, with ongoing investigations to ensure fair trade practices.

The US has collected over $133 billion in tariffs under Trump’s administration, but now faces potential reimbursement to importers. The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling highlighted the requirement for congressional approval for tariff implementation.

Business groups like the British Chambers of Commerce voiced concerns over the impact of the ruling on US tariffs and emphasized the importance of reducing trade barriers. Campaign groups advocated for stronger trade relations with EU neighbors amidst the uncertainty of dealing with the US under Trump’s trade policies.
