“Mother from Gaza Faces Racist Harassment in UK Aspirations”

Date:

A mother of three from Gaza faced severe racist harassment when her plea to relocate her family to the UK to pursue her aspirations was criticized by former Home Secretary and Reform MP Suella Braverman.

Alaa Radwan fled Gaza with her family in 2024 following the destruction of their home during Israeli airstrikes. After seeking refuge in Egypt, they maintained contact with loved ones in the war-torn region of Palestine.

Recently, Alaa received an unconditional offer from Goldsmith’s University for a Master’s program in Media and Communications. To assist with the expenses of relocating her family to the UK, she initiated a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe.

Expressing her excitement, Alaa shared with the Mirror, “This is a dream come true for me. It marks a fresh start for my family as I aim to pursue a Master’s degree and potentially a PhD thereafter. It signifies hope for a family that has faced immense loss in Gaza.”

However, after Alaa’s social media plea on platform X, Suella Braverman reposted her message, suggesting that Alaa should come to the UK alone for her studies, leaving her husband and young children behind.

Braverman’s remarks included, “Bringing your husband and three children is unnecessary for a Media Studies degree. Universities should prioritize education over immigration.”

Subsequently, Alaa encountered a barrage of online racist attacks from right-wing individuals, prompting her to deactivate her X account due to the overwhelming hate messages.

Alaa remarked, “Suella Braverman spearheaded the assault on me, advocating for the separation of a mother from her three young children. Many individuals conveyed unwelcoming sentiments, insisting I should not bring my family to the UK and that they should not bear any financial burden.”

Despite the online abuse, Alaa clarified that the funds raised through GoFundMe were self-supported, emphasizing their intention to be self-sufficient in the UK.

Having successfully raised over £40,000, Alaa and her family have secured the means to embark on their journey to the UK and enroll at Goldsmith’s University. With the tuition fees covered, they are now preparing to apply for visas.

Alaa detailed the allocation of the raised funds on GoFundMe, highlighting the significant portion earmarked for tuition fees and the remaining amount required for visa applications.

Looking ahead, Alaa remains optimistic about a promising future for herself and her family, portraying this opportunity as a fresh start following the adversities endured in Gaza.

For those interested in supporting Alaa’s family’s relocation to the UK, they can contribute through her GoFundMe campaign.
