A well-known retail chain on the main shopping street is preparing to appoint administrators. GAME specializes in selling video games, gaming consoles, accessories, and related merchandise. Recently, the company took a step towards appointing administrators, which initiates a 10-day period during which creditors cannot take legal actions while the company explores its options.
Reports from Express indicate that the final three standalone stores of the company are anticipated to shut down by April 2026. In the past, GAME faced administration in 2012 but was rescued and continued operations under new ownership. In 2019, it was acquired by Sports Direct in a £52 million deal, leading to a rebranding as Frasers Group. Despite this acquisition aimed at stabilizing the business, financial challenges persisted, resulting in a gradual reduction of high street stores and a downsizing of staff, with most head office employees being let go in August 2024.
Moving forward, the retailer plans to maintain its presence through concession outlets within other Frasers Group establishments. Approximately 200 locations currently operate within Sports Direct and House of Fraser stores, ensuring a physical presence despite the closure of standalone stores.
By early 2024, GAME ceased its involvement in the pre-owned market, a segment that had previously contributed significantly to its revenue. Additionally, it discontinued its Xbox All Access service and phased out its customer rewards program later that year.
The gaming retail sector at large has been grappling with challenges as more consumers shift towards online shopping and digital downloads through subscription services, rather than purchasing physical copies in-store.
In parallel with the insolvency proceedings, leadership changes are occurring within the company. Managing director Nick Arran is stepping down after nine years in his role. Arran brings extensive experience in physical media retail, having previously worked at HMV, Blockbuster, and ShopTo.
In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Arran emphasized the company’s commitment to physical video game sales, stating that they aim to be the last standing retailer selling physical games. He acknowledged the evolving market trends but expressed optimism about the company’s future plans to expand through more concession outlets in collaboration with Frasers Group.
