A tragic incident occurred on a cruise ship as a fire broke out in the lounge area of the World Legacy Cruise ship while en route to Singapore. The blaze resulted in one fatality, a 23-year-old Indonesian crew member known as PL, who was pronounced dead after being taken ashore. The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation.
Emergency responders found a laundry attendant unconscious on deck nine during the evacuation process. The ship, carrying 271 passengers and 388 crew members, was successfully evacuated following the outbreak of the fire.
Witnesses recounted the harrowing experience, with one passenger describing the evacuation as “truly terrible and traumatising.” Passengers were instructed to move to deck seven where crew members assisted in distributing life vests and guiding them to safety.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force managed to extinguish the fire six hours after it started, with initial containment efforts by the onboard crew. A safety perimeter was established around the ship, and navigational warnings were issued to nearby vessels to steer clear of the area.
Surveyors appointed by World Legacy will assess the damage on the ship, while a core crew remains onboard to support ongoing operations and aid in the investigation into the cause of the fire.
