A homicide inquiry has been initiated following the fatal stabbing of a teenager outside a mosque.
The incident occurred on Oldbury Road in Smethwick on Friday night after disturbances outside the mosque. Police responded to the scene around 9 pm and discovered an 18-year-old with severe injuries. The teenager has since passed away.
Yesterday marked the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, a period when Muslims observe fasting, prayers, and charitable acts. Authorities have stated that the incident is not being considered as motivated by race or religion.
Two individuals, aged 19 and 22, sustained injuries during the event and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Their injuries are reported as non-life-threatening, as per BirminghamLive.
Online footage depicts ambulances and police cars with flashing blue lights outside the Oldbury Jamia Masjid in Smethwick last night. Additionally, a video shows a group of people gathered outside the mosque. Part of the road was temporarily closed on Friday night but has since reopened completely.
According to a worshipper interviewed by BirminghamLive, individuals were asked to return inside the mosque following the fatal stabbing during evening prayers. The worshipper mentioned that the police secured the area, cordoned off the parking lot, and limited access.
The man revisited the location the next morning to retrieve his vehicle but encountered ongoing access restrictions. Law enforcement officers recorded his contact information and assured him of updates once restrictions are lifted. Individuals returning to the site are urged to provide their details as well.
A representative from West Midlands Police stated, “A murder investigation is in progress following the tragic death of a teenager who was stabbed in Smethwick. We received a call after disturbances outside a mosque on Oldbury Road just before 9 pm yesterday (20 February).
“An 18-year-old individual was discovered with serious injuries and unfortunately passed away. Our condolences go out to his family during this devastating time. Two other men, aged 19 and 22, were hospitalized, though their injuries are not deemed life-threatening.
“Presently, the incident is not being treated as religiously or racially motivated, but we are actively investigating to determine the full circumstances and individuals involved. We are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting inquiries in the vicinity.
