A tragic incident occurred in southern Spain, where a Moroccan fan lost her life in a freak accident while celebrating her country’s 3-0 victory over Canada. The 39-year-old woman was wearing a flag around her neck, which got entangled in the motorbike wheel while her husband was riding the motorcycle in Algeciras.
The accident took place late in the evening after Morocco secured a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals. Witnesses reported that the flag caused a severe neck injury to the victim as it got caught in the bike’s rear wheel. Despite efforts by the police and paramedics to resuscitate her, the woman went into cardiac arrest and was declared dead upon arrival at Punta Europa Hospital.
Authorities confirmed that the woman’s husband was not under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred. An investigation into the tragic event is currently ongoing in the San Garcia neighborhood of Algeciras.
Expressing profound sadness, Algeciras Mayor Jose Ignacio Landaluce extended support to the victim’s family during this difficult time. The city, known for its significant Moroccan community, has been deeply affected by the incident, as around 10,000 Moroccan residents are part of its population.
This unfortunate incident is reminiscent of a similar tragedy involving an Argentinian fan in December 2022. Sebastian Oscar Maciel, 22, lost his life in Bahia Blanca, Buenos Aires, after a flag he was wearing around his neck became entangled in his motorbike wheel, leading to a fatal accident. Witnesses suspected that he died due to asphyxiation caused by the flag restricting his breathing.
