A group of alert schoolchildren averted a potential tragedy when the driver of their school bus lost consciousness while driving on a busy four-lane highway. The driver, Leah Taylor, 46, experienced an asthma attack shortly after departing Hancock Middle School in Hancock County, Mississippi, with 40 students on board. Despite trying to reach for her medication, she passed out, leaving the bus careening down the road.
In a split second, quick-thinking students took action to prevent disaster. 12-year-old Jackson Casnave, seated directly behind the driver, reacted swiftly when the bus started swerving. Without hesitation, Jackson seized the wheel and instructed others to call for help, prioritizing everyone’s safety over his own emotions.
Meanwhile, another 12-year-old sixth-grader, Darrius Clark, applied the brakes, allowing Jackson and him to bring the bus to a stop on the median during the intense incident. Darrius’ 13-year-old sister, Kayleigh, from the back of the bus, contacted emergency services amid the chaotic scene, showing bravery and resolve in the face of fear.
Fifteen-year-old Destiny Cornelius noticed the driver’s nebulizer for asthma treatment and administered the medicine, while 13-year-old McKenzy Finch supported Leah Taylor’s head. McKenzy also managed to answer the driver’s ringing phone and inform the school district transportation team about the situation.
Following the incident, Leah Taylor, now fully recovered, expressed gratitude towards the students for saving her life and those of everyone on the bus. The school recognized the courageous students with a pep rally and arranged a lunch field trip to a restaurant of their choice as a token of appreciation.
Principal Dr. Melissa Saucier commended the students for their courage and initiative, highlighting their exceptional character in taking charge of the situation without hesitation.
