An unidentified outbreak at a children’s hospital in Sweden has led to the evacuation of a unit where 16 staff members have fallen ill, as per reports.
The surgical team at Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital in Gothenburg reportedly experienced sudden illness, showing symptoms resembling an allergic reaction.
Taru Kontio, a safety officer from the Swedish Healthcare Association, informed local media outlet Göteborgs-Posten that 16 staff members from a surgical unit were impacted. Symptoms included runny nose, itchy eyes, severe headaches, itchy scalp, eczema, fever, cough, hoarseness, and nasal congestion.
The affected unit has been cleared out while authorities investigate the outbreak and search for its cause.
Surgical procedures have been relocated to another section of the hospital as the contaminated area undergoes cleaning, with samples set to be analyzed.
Jonas Nordin, the regional property manager for Västra Götaland, acknowledged the situation but stated that the root cause remains unknown at this time.
