Teenager Strikes Gold in Abandoned Storage Unit Business

Date:

A teenager, aged 17, found inspiration from a TV show similar to Storage Hunters to venture into buying abandoned storage lockers. Initially, his family didn’t take his interest seriously until he purchased a storage unit for a little over £300 and uncovered a significant collection of valuable artworks inside.

Michael Haskell, hailing from New Jersey, USA, utilizes a self-developed computer program based on ChatGPT to pinpoint neglected storage units that might have belonged to notable individuals in the past.

The turning point for his family’s acknowledgment was when he stumbled upon a storage unit previously owned by the disgraced New York art dealer, Andrew Crispo.

Acquiring the contents of the Brooklyn unit for $450 (around £330), Michael sold the discovered artworks, which included a painting by surrealist pioneer Man Ray and drawings by Ray’s contemporary Walt Kuhn, for an impressive $50,000 (almost £37,000).

Following this success, Michael’s family began to take his hobby seriously. He operates an eBay store called Mike’s Unique Treasures, where he predominantly sells his discoveries, generating approximately $7,000 (slightly over £5,000) in monthly earnings.

Michael’s mother, Anna, highlighted his entrepreneurial drive, recalling his early ventures at book fairs and later transitioning to buying and reselling discontinued LEGOs. His interest in storage units was sparked by watching Storage Wars.

Michael often uncovers poignant narratives behind the abandoned lockers he acquires. One such locker, previously belonging to a New York socialite, contained designer attire, accessories, empty vodka bottles, and divorce papers.

Delving into the lives connected to these lockers, Michael shared his observation that losing a locker often signifies financial instability and personal struggles, making it a poignant and sometimes sorrowful experience.

The tragic tale of Andrew Crispo, the former owner of the storage unit yielding Michael’s most significant find, adds depth to his journey. Despite being implicated in a notorious murder case and later imprisoned for tax evasion and threats, Crispo died destitute in 2024, allowing Michael to secure the contents of his storage locker inexpensively.

Reflecting on Crispo’s life, Michael remarked on the stark lessons it offers, suggesting it serves as a cautionary tale on how not to navigate one’s life.
